The User Charts feature supports MBTiles, an open-source file format developed by MapBox that allows for efficient compression and distribution of large charts. A program that can generate .mbtiles files is needed. A popular free option is MapTiler, which allows for the importing of images and manually georeference them by aligning the image within a coordinate system.
While .mbtiles files can contain both raster and vector maps, ForeFlight Mobile only supports raster maps. If a file is imported containing vector data, the part of the chart using vector data (which may be the entire thing) will show hash marks on the map with the words "Unsupported data type."
Sample File
The following file provides an example of the kind of charts that can be imported to ForeFlight.
- California-nautical.mbtiles (20.7 MB) - A nautical map of the California coast extending from San Diego to San Francisco.
