A ZFR flight plan is used for flights that begin under VFR (Visual Flight Rules) and switch to IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) at a defined waypoint during the route. To file a ZFR flight plan in ForeFlight, a flight rules waypoint must be added at the location where the flight rule change occurs.
NOTE: Only VFR and IFR flight plan types are used in the US.
Create a ZFR Flight Plan on the Maps View
To create a ZFR flight plan in ForeFlight on the Maps view that begins under VFR and transitions to IFR, follow these steps with the route example:

STEP 1. Open ForeFlight Mobile to the Maps page.
STEP 2. Tap on the FPL button to open the Flight Planning drawer.
STEP 3. Select Edit in the FPL editor.
STEP 4. Enter the waypoints up to and including the transition waypoint where the flight rule will change.
Example entry: (ELLX) (ASMOX) (Y891) (LULAT)
STEP 5. Tap on the transition waypoint to reveal a menu.
STEP 6. Select Set Altitude/Speed/Time...
STEP 7. Set the Altitude, Speed, and Flight Rules.

Create a ZFR Flight Plan on the Flights View
To create a ZFR flight plan in ForeFlight on the Flights view that begins under VFR and transitions to IFR, follow these steps with the route example:
(ELLX) (ASMOX) (Y891) (LULAT) |Change to IFR| (Y891) (ROPUV) (EDFH)

STEP 6. Set Flight Rules to Z(VFR to IFR).
STEP 7. Enter the waypoints up to, but excluding, the transition waypoint where the flight rule will change.
Example entry: (ASMOX) (Y891)
STEP 8. Enter the transition waypoint, speed at transition, and altitude. The format is:
(waypoint/N####F###)
- N: The true airspeed in knots entered as a 4-digit value (usually leads with a zero).
- F or A: Designates the Flight Level or the Altitude, depend on the transition level at the waypoint, in hundreds of feet as a 3-digit value.
In this example, the route should now be:
(ELLX) (ASMOX) (Y891) (LULAT/N0230F140)
STEP 9. Enter the new flight rule (IFR) as a waypoint entry. In this example, the route would now be:
(ELLX) (ASMOX) (Y891) (LULAT/N0230F140) (IFR)
STEP 10. Enter the remainder of the route. If filing in Europe, ensure that the route is Eurocontrol valid. The Route Advisor will generate a valid Eurocontrol ZFR route. In this example, the route would now be:
(ELLX) (ASMOX) (Y891) (LULAT/N0230F140) (IFR) (Y891) (ROPUV) (EDFH)
STEP 11. Complete the remainder of the form.
STEP 12. Select Proceed to File.
