This article explains how to create a KML file with user waypoints defined by street addresses for use in ForeFlight. In this example, the following addresses will be used to create waypoints:
- 1000 N Croatan Hwy, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948
- 525 W 20th Ave, Oshkosh, WI 54902
To create a KML file using Google Earth, follow these steps:
STEP 1 . Open Google Earth.
STEP 2. Enter the address of the waypoint in the search box in the upper left.
STEP 3. Select Search.
STEP 4. Right-click on the search result and select Save to My Places.
STEP 5. Repeat Steps 2 - 4 for all other addresses.
STEP 6. Right-click on My Places in the Places section.
STEP 7. Select Save Place As....
STEP 8. Name the file, choose a destination, and select the KML option from the drop-down menu.
STEP 9. Select Save. A file should be saved like this file: User Waypoints by Address.kml
STEP 10. Import the file into ForeFlight using the options in this article: How can User Map Shapes, KML, or KMZ Shape files be imported?
Once imported, the file will be listed in the app under More > Custom Content > Custom Map Layers.
The user waypoints can be seen on the map by selecting the file as a map layer from the map layer selector in the upper left corner of the Maps page. Tap on a user waypoint to add it to a route.
