The FAA and the National Flight Data Center provide TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction) information every 15 minutes. Updates rates in ForeFlight products are as follows:
- Website: TFRs are updated every 6 minutes.
- ForeFlight Mobile: TFRs in the app update every 12 minutes when connected to the Internet.
When seeking to get timely TFR updates, consider the following:
Graphical TFR Display
If the FAA publishes a TFR without graphical shape information, ForeFlight Mobile will not be able to display it on the Maps page.
Checking TFRs
TFRs are not always shown graphically (due to the FAA not publishing shape data). Before flight, do the following:
- Go to the Airports page and look at airports that will be utilized for a flight. Look under NOTAM > TFR/ARTCC.
- Brief a flight from the Flights page.
ADS-B Receiver Usage
Up-to-date graphical TFR information is only displayed on the Maps page when the TFR Map layer is selected while using an ADS-B receiver.
Data Replay
TFR data may not be updated or displayed if the ADS-B receiver does not receive and store data received while the iPad is asleep or disconnected. To avoid missing updates, keep ForeFlight on during your flight.
ADS-B Tower Coverage
TFR data may not be updated or displayed if the ADS-B receiver is not receiving data from ADS-B towers or if the towers are not broadcasting TFR information. Generally, adequate reception is available when flying at 3,000 feet AGL or higher.
To compensate for ADS-B system limitations, use the Pack feature to capture TFR data before departure.
Stadium TFRs
Stadium TFR, FDC 4/3621, is a generic TFR for stadiums and sporting events. The FAA does not publish TFRs for specific sporting events. Therefore, we use an additional source beyond the FAA to identify events that fall under the restrictions in FDC 4/3621.
