If the GPS location marker isn’t visible on the Maps page, the issue could be related to one of the following:
- Ownship settings may be set to hide the GPS position.
- Location Services on the iPad may not be properly configured.
- WiFi network device access is improperly set for use with a WiFi-connected GPS receiver.
- GPS reception is poor
Ownship Settings
If the GPS icon isn’t visible, it may be due to the Enable Ownship setting being set to Never or Limited. To ensure the location marker is always shown:
- In ForeFlight, go to the More page.
- Select Settings.
- In the Preferences section, select Enable Ownship.
- Select Always.
Enable Ownship’s three settings are:
- Always: Displays GPS location when GPS accuracy is 100 meters or better. If accuracy is 25 meters or better, a pulsing halo appears on plates. The marker hides if no GPS data is received for 20 seconds.
- Never: Hides the location marker on maps and plates at all times.
- Limited: Shows the location marker only on airport diagrams when speed is below 80 knots and accuracy is 25 meters or better. The marker hides if speed exceeds 80 knots, accuracy drops below 25 meters, or GPS data isn’t received within 3 seconds. The marker doesn’t appear on the map in this mode.
Location Services
If the GPS icon isn’t showing, check to see if Location Services are enabled for ForeFlight by following these steps:
- Open the iPad Settings app.
- Select Privacy & Security in the left-hand Settings column.
- Turn the switch On next to Location Services in the right-hand column.
- Scroll down through the right column and tap on the ForeFlight app icon.
- Select Always.
- Turn on Precise Location.
WiFi Network Device Access
If the GPS source is connected via WiFi, the network settings may not be set to allow the device to be accessed. To check:
- Open the iPad or iPhone Settings app.
- Tap on the Apps icon in the left column.
- Tap on ForeFlight.
- Turn the switch On next to Local Network.
GPS Reception
If the GPS icon is not seen, the GPS receiver may have poor reception. Move the receiver to a different location in the cockpit where it has a clear view of the sky.
