In ForeFlight Mobile, “ownship” refers to:
- GPS Ownship: The GPS position of the aircraft on the map.
- ADS-B Ownship: The ability to detect and match the ADS-B broadcast traffic target for your aircraft, preventing the traffic target from being shown on the map.
GPS Ownship
GPS Ownship refers to the aircraft icon on the Maps view that represents the aircraft’s GPS position. GPS Ownship settings can be accessed in the app by going to More> Settings. The available options include:
- Ownship Marker: Defines the color and shape of the aircraft icon displayed on the Maps, Track Logs, and Plates views.
- Ownship Distance Rings: Displays concentric rings around the aircraft’s position on the map, representing distance or time from the aircraft.
- Ownship Distance Rings Style: Determines whether the rings display by time (minutes) or distance (NM or km).
- Enable Ownship: Controls when the GPS location is displayed (Always, Never, or Limited).
- Ownship Not For Navigation: Adds a “Not for navigation” label to the top right of the Maps view and the top left of the Plates view.
ADS-B Ownship Detection
ADS-B Ownship Detection is when ForeFlight detects your aircraft as a traffic target using ADS-B traffic data. This detection happens when ForeFlight compares your aircraft’s GPS position with nearby ADS-B traffic targets and identifies one of the traffic targets as your aircraft, preventing the display of the aircraft as a separate traffic target on the map.
To check the status of ADS-B Ownship Detection:
- Select More.
- Tap Devices.
- Tap on the connected ADS-B receiver.
- Scroll to the Traffic section and view the Ownship status.
