An ADS-B or XM receiver is required to ensure that weather information is up to date in flight. These receivers allow pilots to receive weather updates in flight, giving them access to the latest weather information.
ADS-B receivers can be portable, such as the Sentry line of receivers, or part of an integrated panel avionics system, such as a Garmin GTX-345 or an Avidyne IFD-550.
The XM receivers that work with ForeFlight are the Garmin GDL 51/52 receivers. TheĀ GDL 51 receiver only receives XM Weather, while theĀ GDL 52 receiver receives both XM and ADS-B.
If using an ADS-B or XM receiver is not an option, use the Pack feature in ForeFlight to download the latest weather information just before a flight. Pack analyzes the proposed route and downloads the latest weather products and other data while connected to Wi-Fi. Learn more about the Pack feature here: What is the Pack feature?
