A ceiling icon is displayed only under specific conditions:
-
Cloud Coverage:
- A ceiling icon appears when at least one cloud layer is reported as broken (BKN) or overcast (OVC).
- No ceiling icon is shown if cloud layers are reported as scattered (SCT), few (FEW), or clear (CLR).
-
Vertical Visibility:
- Vertical visibility extending into an obscuration (e.g., VV003) qualifies as a ceiling and triggers the icon.
This ensures ceiling icons are only displayed when significant cloud coverage or restricted visibility exists.
Ceiling icon is displayed due to a broken (BKN) cloud layer at 25,000 feet.
No Ceiling icon is displayed due to cloud layers being listed as few (FEW) and scattered (SCT).
