Transfer Logbook Data into the ForeFlight Logbook Template
The ForeFlight logbook template has two sections for transferring data: the Aircraft table and the Flights table.
Transferring Aircraft into the Aircraft Table
The Aircraft Table is used to reference aircraft characteristics for reporting purposes. The Flights table provides a field for an aircraft registration number. The Aircraft Table also has a field for a registration number, but adds associated fields to define the characteristics of that aircraft.
The aircraft table defines the following elements: Aircraft Identification, Equipment Type, Type Code, Year, Make, Model, Category, Class, Gear Type, Engine Type, Complex, Pressurized, and Technically Advanced Aircraft.
If the spreadsheet that data is being transferred from does not have an Aircraft Table, consider taking the column of Aircraft Registrations and adding those to a column in a new tab. Next, use the following steps in Excel to filter the column to find unique identifiers:
- Click on the letter at the top of the column to select the entire column.
- Click Data in the top menu bar.
- Click on Remove Duplicates. A dialog box will appear showing the columns that Excel will check for duplicates.
- Make sure only the column desired box is checked.
- Click OK. Excel will remove the duplicate entries, leaving only unique values in the list.
Once unique aircraft identifiers are known, transfer them into column A in the ForeFlight logbook template's Aircraft Table under AircraftID. If needed, add more rows to the Aircraft Table.
Fill in the rest of the table to define the characteristics of each aircraft listed. For guidance on the text to use, refer to the Formatting Notes.
Transferring Flights into the Flight Table
The Flights Table is used to record flight events. Columns of data in the spreadsheet entries are being transferred from (donor logbook) will have to be matched to columns in the ForeFlight logbook template. For example, If the donor logbook has a column F named 'Total Flight Time,' it would match Column L in the ForeFlight logbook template named 'TotalTime.'
Copy the columns from the donor logbook and paste them into the appropriate columns in the ForeFlight logbook template. The image below shows the donor logbook on top and where to transfer flight events.
If the donor logbook contains data types not in the ForeFlight Logbook Template, use Custom Fields to record those items. Available custom fields allow the field to be named and can record text, a numeric value, hours, to have a count, record a date, record a time, or mark the entry as being true or false (boolean). The format used is [FieldType]CustomFieldName. For example, to record hours flown as a jump pilot, use [Hours]JumpPilot. See the formatting notes for details.
Below is a sample of the ForeFlight logbook template with the Aircraft Table filled out and entries added to the Flights Table.
When the ForeFlight logbook template is complete, save the file as a CSV file and upload it to your ForeFlight account. To do this, see:
