To optimize your iPad or iPhone for use with ForeFlight Mobile, do the following:
Disable Automatic App Store Updates
To prevent updates at unwanted times (when dealing with flight operations), do the following:
- Open the iPad or iPhone's Settings app.
- Tap on App Store.
- Turn the switch off next to App Updates in the Automatic Downloads section.
NOTE: Remember to periodically check for app updates. To manually update ForeFlight Mobile, follow these steps:
- Open the App Store.
- Tap on your profile icon at the top of the screen.
- On the Account pop-over, scroll to find ForeFlight Mobile. Tap Update next to the app to update only ForeFlight, or tap Update All to update all of your apps.

Ensure GPS Access
Allow ForeFlight Mobile access to GPS position information:
- Open the iPad or iPhone's Settings app.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Tap Location Services.
- Turn the switch on next to Location Services.
- Tap ForeFlight further down the page.
- Select Always.
Enable GPS Position on Map
To ensure your position is displayed on the map:
- Open the iPad or iPhone's Settings app.
- Scroll down the list and tap on ForeFlight.
- In the Preferences section, tap Enable Ownship.
- Select Always.
Enable Notifications
Allow notifications from ForeFlight Mobile to receive important updates, especially for flight plans. To do so:
- Open the iPad or iPhone's Settings app.
- Scroll down the list and tap on ForeFlight.
- Tap Notifications.
- Turn the switch on next to Allow Notifications.
- Choose the preferred notification style.
Quick Access to Important Settings
Access useful settings by swiping down from the upper right corner of the screen to reveal the Control Center. The following settings are handy to use:
- Wi-Fi
- Bluetooth
- Airplane Mode
- Screen Brightness
- Screen Rotation Lock
NOTE: Airplane Mode turns off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular data but leaves GPS on. Re-enable Wi-Fi or Bluetooth if using external devices like Sentry or Garmin Flight Stream.
