External GPS receivers generally provide better accuracy and are easier to place in an unobstructed location than an iPhone or iPad with a built-in GPS receiver. If flight recordings are not sufficiently accurate when using an iPhone or the iPad's internal GPS receiver, then an external GPS receiver is a good solution to consider.
