ForeFlight will recommend a lower altitude when it may be a better performance option.
For a proposed flight, ForeFlight considers the aircraft's weight, air temperature, cruise altitude, and more. While an aircraft might climb to the requested cruise altitude, accelerating to cruise speed can be difficult or impossible in some cases. Therefore, ForeFlight will suggest a lower altitude where the desired cruise speed can be achieved more quickly after leveling off.
Alternatively, if the aircraft can reach the requested cruise altitude after burning some fuel, ForeFlight will recommend a step climb.
