Flight time logged to meet the Private ASEL requirements under FAR §61.109(a) should be logged as follows:
Flight Time Requirements
40 hours of flight time
- Log 40+ hours Total Time.
NOTE: Logbook entries with hours logged as "Simulated Flight" are recognized as time in a flight simulator and are not counted towards Total Time.
Solo Requirements
FAR §61.109(a), Section 5 lists requirements related to logging solo flight time. In order for the entry to be qualified, solo hours must be logged, and no Dual Received (flight training) hours logged.
10 hours of solo flight
- Log 10+ hours Total Time.
- Log 10+ hours Solo.
- Ensure the selected aircraft for the entries has a class of ASEL.
- Do not log Dual Received hours.
5 hours of solo cross-country
- Log 5+ hours Total Time.
- Log 5+ hours Solo.
- Log 5+ hours Cross Country.
- Ensure the selected aircraft for the entries has a class of ASEL.
- Do not log Dual Received hours.
Solo cross-country flight of 150 nautical miles total distance, with full-stop landings at three points, and one segment of the flight consisting of a straight-line distance of more than 50 nautical miles between the takeoff and landing locations
- Log the flight as a single entry.
- Log Total Time and Cross Country hours.
- Log Solo hours.
- Include 3 or more airports in the entry.
- Log 3+ landings.
- The Total Route Distance is ≥ 150nm.
- One destination is ≥ 50nm from your departure airport.
- Ensure the selected aircraft for the entries has a class of ASEL.
- Do not log Dual Received hours.
3 takeoffs and 3 full stop landings solo at a towered airport
- Log Total Time hours.
- Log Solo hours.
- Log Takeoffs and Landings.
- Ensure the selected aircraft for the entries has a class of ASEL.
- Ensure a towered airport is included in the From, To, or Route fields.
- Do not log Dual Received hours.
Dual Received Requirements
FAR §61.109(a), Sections 1 to 4 outline requirements related to flight training with a flight instructor. "Dual Received" hours should be logged for these requirements.
20 hours of flight training
- Log 20+ hours Dual Received (training).
- Log Total Time in conjunction with Dual Received.
3 hours of cross-country flight training in a single-engine airplane
- Log Total Time and Cross Country hours.
- Log Dual Received (training).
- Ensure the selected aircraft for the entry has a class of ASEL.
3 hours of night flight training in a single-engine airplane
- Log Total Time and Cross Country hours.
- Log Night hours.
- Log Dual Received (training).
- Ensure the selected aircraft for the entry has a class of ASEL.
Night cross-country training flight of over 100 nautical miles total distance
- Log the flight as a single entry.
- Log Total Time and Cross Country hours.
- Log Night hours.
- Log Dual Received (training).
- Ensure that your destination is ≥ 100nm from your departure airport.
- Ensure the selected aircraft for the entry has a class of ASEL.
10 takeoffs and 10 full-stop landings at an airport at night
- Log Total Time hours.
- Log Solo/PIC or Dual Received hours.
- Log Night hours.
- Log Night Takeoffs and Night Landings.
- Ensure the selected aircraft for the entries has a class of ASEL.
3 hours of flight training in a single-engine airplane solely by reference to instruments
- Log Total Time hours.
- Log Simulated or Actual Instrument hours.
- Log Dual Received (training).
- Ensure the selected aircraft for the entries has a class of ASEL.
3 hours of flight training in a single-engine airplane within the preceding 2 calendar months
- Log Total Time hours.
- Log Dual Received (training).
- Ensure the selected aircraft for the entries has a class of ASEL.
- Ensure the entry date is within the past 2 calendar months
