A ZFR flight plan is used for a flight that will initially be operated under VFR and then at a defined point during the flight, the flight rules under which the flight will be operated will change. To file a ZFR flight plan in ForeFlight you must add a flight rules waypoint to indicate where the flight rule will change from VFR to another flight rule (e.g IFR).

NOTE: Currently in the US, only VFR and IFR types are used. 

This article will demonstrate how to create an IFR flight with the following route:

         ELLX ASMOX Y891 LULAT (Change to IFR) Y891 ROPUV EDFH

 Create the Flight on the Maps View

To see how to create this ZFR flight plan on the Maps view, follow these steps:

STEP 1:  On the Maps view, in the FPL editor, enter your route waypoints up to the point prior to where the flight rule will change. In this example, enter (ELLX) (ASMOX) (Y891).

STEP 2: Enter the transition waypoint followed by a slash (/), and then “N” followed by the true airspeed in knots as a 4-digit value, and an "F" or "A" followed by the altitude in hundreds of feet as a 3-digit value. Select RETURN on the keyboard to commit this waypoint entry. In this example, the route should now be (ELLX) (ASMOX) (Y891) (LULAT/N0120F060).

NOTE: The TAS must be 4 digits long. For example, a TAS of 120Kts would be entered as N0120. 
             The"F" or "A" designator for altitude will depend on the transition level at the waypoint. For
             example, an altitude of 6000ft would be entered as F060.

STEP 3: Enter the new flight rule as a waypoint entry. In this example, you would enter IFR and the route would now be (ELLX) (ASMOX) (Y891) (LULAT/N0120F060) (IFR).

STEP 4: Enter the remainder of the route to the destination. In this example, the final route would be (ELLX) (ASMOX) (Y891) (LULAT/N0120F060) (IFR) (Y891) (ROPUV) (EDFH).

STEP 5: Send the route to the Flights page.

STEP 6: Change the FLIGHT RULES to "(Z VFR to IFR)."

STEP 7: File the flight plan.

Create the Flight on the Flights View

To see how to create the ZFR flight plan on the Flights view, follow these steps:

STEP 1:  In the Flights view, enter your DEPARTURE airport.

STEP 2: Enter your DESTINATION airport.

STEP 3: Complete the information up to the Route section.

STEP 4: Change FLIGHT RULES to "Z (VFR to IFR)."

STEP 8: Enter the remainder of the route. If you are filing in Europe, ensure that the route is Eurocontrol valid. Of note, the Route Advisor will generate a valid Eurocontrol ZFR route.

STEP 9: Complete the rest of the form.

STEP 10: File the flight plan.
