How do I File a YFR (Y IFR to VFR) flight plan in ForeFlight Mobile?

A YFR flight plan means the flight initially will be operated under IFR, followed by one or more changes of flight rules. To file a YFR flight plan in ForeFlight you must select the waypoint where the flight rule will change from IFR to another flight rule (e.g VFR).

NOTE: Currently, in the US, only VFR and IFR types are used.

This article will demonstrate how to create a YFR flight with the following route:

EDDW WSN1K.WSN AVESA WTM [Change to VFR] ETNT

Create the Flight on the Maps View

To see how to create this YFR flight plan the Maps view, follow these steps:

STEP 1: On the Maps view, in the FPL editor, enter your route waypoints up to the point prior to where the flight rule will change. In this example, enter (EDDW) (WSN1K.WSN) (AVESA).

STEP 2: Enter the transition waypoint followed by a slash (/), and then “N” followed by the true airspeed in knots as a 4-digit value. Select RETURN on the keyboard to commit this waypoint entry. In this example, the route should now be (EDDW) (WSN1K.WSN) (AVESA) (WTM/N0142).

NOTE: The TAS must be 4 digits long. For example, a TAS of 142Kts would be entered as N0142.

STEP 3: Enter the new flight rule as a waypoint entry. In this example, you would enter VFR and the route would now be (EDDW) (WSN1K.WSN) (AVESA) (WTM/N0142) (VFR).

STEP 4: Enter the remainder of the route to the destination. In this example, the final route would be (EDDW) (WSN1K.WSN) (AVESA) (WTM/N0142) (VFR) (ETNT).

STEP 5: Send the route to the Flights page.

STEP 6: Change the FLIGHT RULES to "Y (IFR to VFR)."

STEP 7: File the flight plan.

Create the Flight on the Flights View

To see how to create the YFR flight plan on the Flights view, follow these steps:

STEP 1: In the Flights view, enter your DEPARTURE airport.

STEP 2: Enter your DESTINATION airport.

STEP 3: Complete the information up to the Route section.

STEP 4: Change FLIGHT RULES to "Y (IFR to VFR)."

STEP 8: If you are filing in Europe, ensure that the route is Eurocontrol valid. Of note, the Route Advisor will generate a valid Eurocontrol YFR route.
