To import user waypoints into ForeFlight Mobile using a KML file by following these steps:
STEP 1: Ensure that the KML file contains only user waypoints.
STEP 2: Verify that the waypoint names are formatted as follows:
- Must be at least three characters long and include at least one letter.
- All letters must be capitalized.
- No spaces are allowed. Use a "_" or "-" between words.
Here is an example of a properly formatted User Waypoint KML Sample File
STEP 3: Name the KML file. Any file name ending .kml is supported, provided it contains only user waypoints.
STEP 4: Import the user waypoints into ForeFlight using either of the following options:
IMPORTANT: Importing a waypoint with the same name as an existing waypoint will cause the existing waypoint to be overwritten.
OPTION 1. Importing User Waypoints via a Content Pack
STEP 5: Add the User Waypoint file to the "navdata" folder in a Content Pack.
STEP 6:. Import the Content Pack into ForeFlight Mobile via AirDrop, Email, hyperlink, linked Cloud Documents drive, or Finder.
OPTION 2. Importing User Waypoints via AirDrop
STEP 5: Enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the Mac and iPad or iPhone.
STEP 6: Drag the KML file from the computer's Finder into the AirDrop folder and drop it onto the device to transfer to. A popup on the receiving device will ask which app to send the imported file to.
STEP 7: Tap ForeFlight.
STEP 8: Confirm the importation of the file contents as user waypoints. The new waypoints will be added to the User Waypoints page in More > User Content.
OPTION 3. Importing User Waypoints via Email
STEP 5: Attach the user waypoints KML file to an email and send it to the intended recipient(s).
STEP 6: Open the email in the Apple Mail app.
STEP 7: Tap and hold on the attachment to import. A share option will appear.
STEP 8: Swipe through the apps until ForeFlight is seen. Tap Copy to ForeFlight. ForeFlight will open.
STEP 9: Select whether to import the file as a User Map Layers file or as a User Waypoints file.
OPTION 4. Importing User Waypoints via Finder on a Mac (macOS Catalina 10.15 or later)
STEP 5: Connect the iPad or iPhone to the computer via a USB cable.
STEP 6: Open Finder.
STEP 7: Click on the iPad or iPhone in the Finder sidebar under "Locations".
NOTE: If the iPad or iPhone does not appear, open Finder Preferences: Sidebar, and click the box "CDs, DVDs, and iOS Devices". Choose "Trust this iPad" on the Mac. Choose "Trust this Computer" on the iPad.
STEP 8: Click on Files.
NOTE: If the iPad or iPhone does not appear, open Finder Preferences: Sidebar, and click the box "CDs, DVDs, and iOS Devices".
STEP 9: Drag & drop the user_waypoints.csv file onto the ForeFlight icon by dragging and dropping the user waypoint file onto the desktop and then dragging it into the ForeFlight icon in Finder.
STEP 10: Click on the Sync button in the lower-right corner if needed.
STEP 11: After the copying has been completed, launch ForeFlight on the iPad or iPhone.
STEP 12: Tap More > Custom Content > User Waypoints. ForeFlight will detect the newly added file and ask whether you want to import it as a User Map Layers file or a User Waypoints file.
STEP 13: Select to import as either a User Map Layers file or a User Waypoints file. ForeFlight will add the file to the proper list in More > User Content.
