iPads and iPhones emit light, which can reduce night vision. The following sections provide options to configure the iOS device and ForeFlight Mobile to minimize the effects of light on vision at night.
Activate ForeFlight’s Dark Theme
ForeFlight’s Dark theme is the quickest way to turn app elements dark. To manually turn on the Dark theme:
STEP 1. In the Navigation Toolbar, tap More > Settings.
STEP 2. In the App Theme section, tap Dark.
STEP 3. The screen brightness can be fine-tuned by moving the slider, which also affects the whole iOS device, not just ForeFlight.
Configure ForeFlight’s Dark Theme Settings
Dark theme can be configured to affect only certain app elements. To configure ForeFlight’s Dark theme settings:
STEP 1. In the Navigation Toolbar, tap More > Settings.
STEP 2. In the App Theme section, tap Dark Settings.
STEP 3. Configure the following settings as desired:
- App Color: Tap Dark to darken the background of ForeFlight views except as specified below.
- Aeronautical Map Theme: Tap Dark to darken the color of the Aeronautical Map layer in all views.
- Invert Plates: Toggle this on to invert the colors of plates and airport diagrams on the Plates view.
- Invert Charts: Toggle this on to invert the colors of all aeronautical chart layers on the Map view.
- Invert Documents: Toggle this on to invert the colors of documents in the Documents view.
Set up the iOS Device Dark Theme
The iOS device has its own Dark theme. While this can be turned on manually, it’s better if it is scheduled to switch automatically with local sunset and sunrise. When this is done, set ForeFlight to match the current iOS device theme.
To schedule the iOS device theme:
STEP 1. On the iOS device, tap Settings > Display & Brightness.
STEP 2. Under Appearance, toggle on Automatic, and then tap Options > Sunset to Sunrise.
STEP 3. Under Appearance, move the slider to fine-tune screen brightness, which affects the whole iOS device, not just ForeFlight.
To sync ForeFlight with the iOS theme:
STEP 1. Open ForeFlight Mobile.
STEP 2. In the Navigation Toolbar, tap More > Settings.
STEP 3. In the App Theme section, tap System.
