To enable ADS-B traffic to display within ForeFlight Mobile, when using a Garmin GTX 330 transponder and a portable ADS-B receiver like the Sentry, the setup must be set to allow the Ground Based Transceiver (GBT) know what ADS-B-In capabilities are available, prompting the GBT to generate complete TIS-B and ADS-R traffic reports.
Steps for Proper GTX 330 Setup
To confirm the GTX 330 setup, do the following:
1. Confirm the ADS-B-In Settings: In the Garmin GTX 330, check that 1090 In and UAT In are set to YES.
2. Verify Setup with Sentry: Once configured and during flight, the aircraft’s N-number should appear in the Ownship ADS-B Out field within the Sentry Status page in ForeFlight Mobile. This field is seen by going to More > Devices and tapping the Sentry tile.
3. Post-Flight Verification with the FAA: After a flight, request an ADS-B performance report from the FAA to confirm the equipment is broadcasting correctly. Visit FAA ADS-B Performance Reports and follow the instructions to request the report. The report (available within a few hours) should indicate Dual under In Capability, verifying a correct setup.
If Dual is not shown, or the GBT is not sending ADS-B In data, the transponder may need further configuration. Have an avionics shop check the configuration.
