Wi-Fi-only iPads do not have an internal GPS receiver, meaning an external GPS is necessary to view GPS position information within ForeFlight Mobile.
iPhones and iPads equipped with Wi-Fi + Cellular have a built-in GPS receiver (no cellular data plan is required for GPS to work). In many cases, the internal GPS works well enough for typical navigation needs.
However, some users may find that the internal GPS receiver is not sufficient for specific situations. Common reasons include:
- Cockpit structures that block GPS reception.
- Robust device cases that reduce signal strength.
- Electrically heated windshields interfering with GPS signals.
- Mounting the iPad in areas with poor reception.
For those encountering GPS reception issues, ForeFlight recommends using external GPS receivers such as Bad Elf or DUAL. Additionally, ADS-B receivers like Sentry, not only provide ADS-B data but also deliver GPS position information.
ForeFlight can also receive GPS data from avionics systems through the ForeFlight Connect feature. For more information, visit ForeFlight Connect.
