GPS accuracy during flight depends on many factors, from equipment to device location.
Before considering how to maximize GPS accuracy, make sure Location Services are turned On and enabled for ForeFlight in the Settings application under Privacy & Security > Location Services. Also, open ForeFlight, tap More > Settings and set Enable Ownship to Always.
To ensure good GPS accuracy, do the following:
- Make sure the GPS receiver has a clear view of the sky.
- If using electrically heated windshields, position the GPS receiver as far away from the windscreen as practical.
- Get a location fix on the ground before takeoff.
- Ensure the device's date, time, and timezone are correctly set in Apple Settings > General > Date & Time. It is recommended to use Set Automatically.
- If using a case on your iPad or iPhone, consider removing the case.
NOTE: WiFi-only iPads do not have a GPS receiver and will require an external GPS source, such as a Sentry. iPads that are cellular capable do have a built-in GPS receiver. A cellular data plan is not required to use ForeFlight Mobile or to get a GPS location fix.
